The Importance of Sustainable Scale  

 

  The Sustainable Scale issue is important because:

• Of the Global Scope   Over time scale problems have grown to the point they now involve global ecosystems.
• The Severe Consequences   Ecosystems are now providing fewer services critical to human well being than they did in the past. 
• The Situation is Getting Worse   Almost all measures of sustainable scale are indicating rapid decline.
• The Problems are Pervasive   Several major global ecosystems are currently either unsustainable or rapidly approaching unsustainability.
• Time is Short   Many of the affected global ecosystems involve long term cycles that delayed our recognition of the problem. Some problems are still not being addressed.
• Considerable Uncertainty Exists   We know enough now, even though our understanding is incomplete, to take action.
• Couterintuitive Solutions Are Needed   The necessary scale relevant solutions are contrary to the dominant policy of economic growth.
